- A teenager has started a petition to move the Super Bowl to Saturday.
- The petition has currently acquired over 6,500 signatures.
MIAMI – The age-old discussion has begun again. As with every Super Bowl season, ordinary people take a look at the schedule and ask an important question: Why is the Super Bowl not on Saturday?
In theory, a Saturday Super Bowl would make a lot of sense. The Super Bowl is one of the biggest party nights in the US, and having it on a Saturday would allow people to indulge without having to worry about going to work the next day.
A Saturday start time would also have benefits for children, who would be able to stay up late to watch the game without worrying about their ability to wake up for school the next day.
One teenager, Frank Ruggeri, has started a petition on Change.org, petitioning the NFL and Roger Goodell to move the game to Saturday for SB 55, citing similar concerns.
Ruggeri contends that the Super Bowl moving to Saturday will result in increased profit, however, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell might disagree.
In 2018, Kyle Brandt asked Goodell why the big game was held on a Sunday, and the commissioner responded in a typical way: ratings.
Per Goodell: "The reason we haven't done it in the past is simply just from an audience standpoint. The audiences on Sunday night are so much larger. Fans want to have the best opportunity to be able to see the game and we want to give that to them, so Sunday night is a better night."
There is also the built-up brand around the game to consider. Super Bowl Sunday is a recurrent brand, a memetic phrase that has entered the cultural lexicon in a way that might encourage decision makers not to scrap it.
High ratings and name recognition are good for every industry around the Super Bowl, from the commercials to the betting.
Whatever the result of the petition, it’s commendable to at least ask. While the NFL is understandably aimed at ratings, there’s no harm in having fans' voices be heard.
