- The FAA makes the Hard Rock Stadium and surrounding areas a No Drone Zone.
- There will be a temporary flight restriction for drones within a 30 nautical mile radius.
- Drone operators who violate the ban can face fines of more than $30,000 and potential criminal charges.
MIAMI - Super Bowl 54 kicks off Sunday and local residents and tourists alike should know that the Hard Rock Stadium and surrounding areas are a No Drone Zone.
The No Drone Zone is a temporary ban on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) implemented by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This ban is for the safety of all attendees for the Super Bowl and related festivities.
With the influx of people during Super Bowl week, authorities are taking many steps to ensure the safety and security for the Super Bowl and surrounding events. The temporary flight restriction is intended to decrease the possibility of potential threats to that safety.
Drones Aren’t Welcome
The temporary flight restriction will prohibit UAVs from flying within a 30 nautical mile radius of the Hard Rock Stadium and up to 18,000 feet in altitude. The ban will begin on February 2 at 5:30 p.m. and will last until 11:59 p.m. EST.
In addition to the Hard Rock Stadium, the FAA will restrict drones from flying one nautical mile surrounding the Bayfront Park and the Miami Beach Convention Center up to an altitude of 2,000 feet during daytime hours. This restriction began on January 25 and will last until February 1.
If any drone operator chooses to violate any of these bans, they run the risk of civil penalties that may exceed $30,000 and possible criminal prosecution. The FAA is being extremely strict with their ban, working with homeland security and local law enforcement to aid them.
A Safer Super Bowl 54
Super Bowl 54 kicks off Sunday, February 2 at 6 p.m. EST and will see the San Francisco 49ers face off against the Kansas City Chiefs. With the hundreds of thousands of fans converging into Miami and surrounding areas, the FAA is just trying to make sure everyone stays safe.
For this reason, the FAA will be working with local law enforcement to be on the lookout for unauthorized drones. Even consumer drones can be viewed as potentially lethal weapons and authorities will be taking no chances come Super Bowl Sunday.
