Giants, Lions Willing To Trade Draft Pick But Would It Help Their Odds?

• The Detroit Lions have the 3rd overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

• The New York Giants are owners of the 4th overall pick in 2020 NFL Draft.

INDIANAPOLIS – The NFL combine is underway with every teams’ scouts and general managers in Indianapolis looking at the prospect pool for the 2020 NFL Draft. Two teams drafting in the top five have already made it apparent that they’re open to trading their draft picks before the combine has even concluded.

Those teams are the Detroit Lions and the New York Giants who have the third and fourth picks in the draft. Below we assess the impact a draft-day trade could have on each team’s longshot Super Bowl 55 odds.

Detroit Lions (+6600)

Draft Pick: 3rd Overall

2019 Record: 3-12-1

The Lions trading down in the draft makes sense as they don’t have a pressing need for a quarterback because they still have former No. 1 pick, Matthew Stafford, on their roster.

In a draft loaded with defensive talent and that being the biggest need for the Lions expect them to be trade partners with a team willing to pay a steep price to draft a player like Tua Tagovailoa after LSU Tigers quarterback Joe Burrow and Ohio State Buckeyes defensive end Chase Young are off the board.

Detroit will be looking to trade their best cornerback in Darius Slay this offseason, and they’ll likely look to the draft for his successor. This makes trading back to and staying within the top 10 picks a top priority for the Lions front office.

If the Lions do trade down, they’ll have their eyes on adding another piece to a defense that needs a lot of work done to improve the team. The Lions have +6600 to win the franchise’s first-ever Super Bowl for a reason and it starts with rebuilding the defensive side of the ball first.

A draft-day trade would make the Lions odds shorter but so would drafting the best defensive player available at the third pick.

New York Giants (+5000)

Draft Pick: 4th Overall

2019 Record: 4-12

The New York Giants find themselves in a familiar position as this marks the fourth out five years that the team has landed a top 10 draft pick. This is maybe part of the reason why the Giants are willing to trade this pick because they’re tired of picking this early in the draft.

What happens with the fourth pick largely depends on what the Lions do with their pick.

If no team trades with the Lions for the third pick and Tua Tagovailoa is still on the board expect the Giant's phone to be buzzing with a plethora of teams calling with trades in line for the fourth pick in the draft.

New York has a long way to go before getting back into contention and their Super Bowl odds should be longer than the +5000 they currently sit at especially under first year head coach Joe Judge. The Giants should absolutely trade back in the draft no matter what as they’re a team that has a lot of holes to fill around young players like quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Saquon Barkley.
