- The Washington Redskins have -1600 odds to change the franchise name.
- The Washington Warriors have the shortest odds at +275 of being the team's new nickname.
- Nike, FedEx, and Pepsi have all put pressure on the Redskins to change their team name.
WASHINGTON — The Washington Redskins have come under fire yet again due to their refusal to change the team's name as a “Redskin” is a derogatory term used to describe Native Americans. Washington and their owner Daniel Snyder have received backlash for many years about the team’s name yet nothing has been done or considered.
Snyder has been against changing the name for years now and has been on the record saying he won’t change the name.
“I respect the opinions of those who disagree," said Snyder. "I want them to know that I do hear them, and I will continue to listen and learn. But we cannot ignore our 81-year history or the strong feelings of most of our fans as well as Native Americans throughout the country. After 81 years, the team name 'Redskins' continues to hold the memories and meaning of where we came from, who we are, and who we want to be in years to come."
In today’s social climate where race relations are now front and center immense pressure has been put on the Redskins to change the teams name as FedEx who owns the naming rights to the team's stadium and has a CEO that is a minority owner of the team pushed for change.
Nike removed the team's merchandise from its site which was the biggest domino to fall thus far for the team. Pepsi also added pressure to push the team towards change as for the first time major corporations were stepping in to force changes.
The pressure has worked as the team has said in a statement that it will do a thorough review of the name which should result in the team having a new nickname and logo in the next two seasons.
In light of recent events around our country and feedback from our community, the Washington Redskins are announcing the team will undergo a thorough review of the team's name. This review formalizes the initial discussions the team has been having with the league in recent weeks," said the statement. "... We believe this review can and will be conducted with the best interest of all in mind."
Since the Redskins are going to get a new name soon betting on what they will be called next provides bettors with some NFL betting props to indulge in before the conclusion of the offseason.
Official Name of the Washington NFL Team for NFL Week 1 2021 Odds
- Washington Warriors +275
- Washington Red Tails +375
- Washington Presidents +450
- Washington Americans +550
- Washington Redskins +650
- Washington Senators +1000
- Washington Federals +1100
Washington Warriors (+275)
This potential name for the Redskins is the favorite and should be bet on because the team's current owner Daniel Snyder already owns the trademark for the name as it was originally planned to be for an Arena Football League team that never came to fruition.
The Warriors' name would still come with some controversy as people on social media have begun to against this name change.
However, since Snyder already owns the trademark this is the easiest legal path for him to take. The +275 odds here are worth the risk strictly because Snyder owns the trademark already and it may allow the Redskins to keep their current color scheme.
It seems like years and years of pressure have led the team to this boiling point and the immense pressure put on the team has caused them to cave. The Redskins will be sporting a new NFL team name either this season or next no matter what and that’s a change that should be welcomed with open arms.
