Trevor Lawrence Favored to Win Rookie of the Year

LAS VEGAS – Trevor Lawrence, maybe unsurprisingly, is the odds-on favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year next season. Lawrence is widely considered the best player in the rookie class, but is he in the best position to win the award?

Trevor Lawrence As The Favorite

If Trevor Lawrence wasn’t the betting favorite, it’d be a line that every NFL bettor would’ve jumped all over. With +300 odds, it’s still an enticing bet but it doesn’t come without risk.

Lawrence has an advantage over the rest of the field in that it’s pretty much guaranteed that he’ll start every game in the season barring an injury. Not many other rookies have that luxury. However, the Jacksonville Jaguars still have a lot of holes within their offense.

It’s tough to give an award to someone on a 4-13 football team, which is a record the team could possibly finish with. With that said, if Lawrence throws for 5,000 yards, you can’t keep it away from him regardless of record.

Justin Fields In A Better Spot?

Justin Fields should be the day-one starter for the Chicago Bears. If he is, then he immediately becomes the quarterback in the best position to succeed. Not only do the Bears have a solid defense, but they also have talent on the offensive side of the ball as well.

Allen Robinson II, Anthony Miller, Darnell Mooney, Marquise Goodwin, Cole Kmet and Jimmy Graham make up the potential pass-catchers while Tarik Cohen and David Montgomery are weapons in the backfield.

No other rookie quarterback has anything close to that many weapons and could put Fields into the forefront of the Rookie of the Year conversation.

Does A Non-QB Have A Shot?

NFL betting fans could cash in on a bigger ticket if betting on a pass-catcher to win Rookie of the Year. Odell Beckham Jr. is the last receiver to win the award in 2014. Ja’Marr Chase (+900) could be able to be the first since.

Chase enters the NFL in a pretty good situation. He has his college quarterback Joe Burrow who helped make him a Biletnikoff winner at LSU.

Burrow was throwing for about 270 yards per game before his injury, and with the Cincinnati Bengals projecting to be losing games next year, there should be plenty of opportunities for Chase to make some big plays.

Kyle Pitts, with +800 odds, will be looking to be the first tight end since Mike Ditka in 1961 to win Rookie of the Year honors. He’ll benefit from having an established quarterback in Matt Ryan delivering him the ball.

Matt Ryan might need to turn back the clocks and have an MVP-type season for Pitts to win the award, but a talent like Pitts could do it by himself as well.
