It’s A Quarterback’s Award
First things first, we can pretty much eliminate any other position other than quarterback. A QB has won the MVP award in each of the last eight seasons, with Adrian Peterson’s 2,097 yard rushing season as the last time a non-quarterback has won MVP. To put things in perspective, Derrick Henry ran 2,027 yards last year, just 70 less yards than Peterson, and didn’t receive a single vote for MVP.
Also, we can rule out defensive players. Lawrence Taylor was the last player on the defensive side of the ball to win MVP back in 1986. In 2001, Michael Strahan recorded an all-time record of 22.5 sacks and also did not receive a single MVP vote.
Dak Prescott (+1300)
Dak Prescott is coming off of a gruesome leg injury which caused him to miss most of last season, but is in a good spot to come back strong. Last season, Prescott had three games in which he threw for over 450 yards and did so by completing a combined 69.1% of his passes.
Of course, the question remains if Prescott will be his normal self after the injury, but his offensive weapons are pretty much the same as last year and if he can replicate those numbers, he will surely be in contention for MVP as the season ends.
Russell Wilson (+1600)
Russell Wilson was in the top 10 in passing yards and third in passing touchdowns. This year, now that DK Metcalf has established himself as a legit threat and the team has filled up some of the offensive line issues, Wilson is set up to dominate next year.
Everyone knows that Russ is one of the best quarterbacks in the league, so the fact that NFL betting sites list seven other players above him is interesting.
Justin Herbert (+1800)
Justin Herbert had a historic rookie season and will be looking to build upon it in his sophomore campaign. Herbert will enter the season with his top targets returning and will be getting a healthy Austin Ekeler, one of the best pass-catching backs in the league. He’ll also have Cam Akers to potentially throw the ball to, who is an up-and-coming pass-catching back as well.
If Herbert keeps getting better and better, he might be on the path to an MVP award and it could be next season.
Trevor Lawrence (+8000)
Nobody wants to be the one to say a rookie is about to win MVP, but Trevor Lawrence might have a shot. Considering the buzz around his name, if there isn’t a clear-cut winner and Lawrence had an impressive season, his name could be in the conversation.
Usually MVPs come from teams who did well in the regular season, but since the Jacksonville Jaguars were so bad last year, people could make that case that Lawrence leading the team to a .500 record would be worthy of MVP honors.
