Should Dak Be A Bigger Favorite?
Many NFL bettors may be surprised to find out Dak Prescott is only listed with odds of +150 to win the award. He’s the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, gets the most media attention of anybody on the list and is in the best position to succeed.
A quarterback has won the award in each of the past three seasons and in nine of the past 13 years, putting Prescott in an even better position to win the award. Simply said, if he performs at the level we’re used to seeing from him, Prescott is a lock to win Comeback Player of the Year.
Who Could Win Instead?
Nick Bosa would need an absolutely monster season to win the award as only one defensive player has won the honors in the past 20 seasons (Eric Berry). It’s not impossible for Bosa to win, but likely not worth the odds he’s being listed with.
Saquon Barkley and Christian McCaffrey seem like good options considering they’re two of the best running backs in the NFL, but the last RB to be named Comeback Player of the Year was Willis McGahee in 2004.
Barkley may have the edge over McCaffrey since he has less competition in the backfield (Panthers drafted Chuba Hubbard) and because he’s a true three-down back. Plus, Barkley has enough weapons around him in the offense where he shouldn’t be keyed in on so heavily by opposing defenses.
Joe Burrow might be the next best betting option behind Prescott. He fits the mold well enough to be deserving of the second-shortest odds. He’s a quarterback, loved by the fans, gets media attention and is thought to be the saving grace of a franchise.
Burrow was on pace to set a handful of rookie quarterback records but fell short due to his injury. His 268.8 yards per game were seventh-most in the NFL, more than MVP-winner Aaron Rodgers. He’ll have enough opportunities to make a good push at the award, but Prescott would likely need to fall off a bit for it to happen.
