CHARLOTTE – The New England Patriots will play the Carolina Panthers for the fifth time since their meeting in Super Bowl XXXVIII. While Carolina has had success, sportsbooks are expecting a different result.
The Super Bowl XXXVIII Rematch
In 2004, the New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers met in Super Bowl XXXVIII. The Patriots won by a final score of 32-29 as it marked Tom Brady’s second Super Bowl championship.
Now, 17 years later, NFL betting sites are expecting a similar result as their Super Bowl tilt.
Patriots vs Panthers Spread Odds
- New England Patriots -3.5 -115
- Carolina Panthers +3.5 -105
Neither team seems anything close to a Super Bowl contender, but the teams are apparently the same in relation to one another. While the Panthers are the betting underdogs in the matchup, history shows their success against New England since the Super Bowl loss.
Carolina has won three of the four meetings against New England since Super Bowl XXXVIII which may bring some value to the underdogs on the moneyline.
Panthers vs Patriots Moneyline Odds
- Carolina Panthers +155
- New England Patriots -180
These are completely different rosters than the ones from even the most recent game (2017), but it’s worth noting nonetheless.
How The Teams Stack Up
The Panthers’ offense has left a lot to be desired as they average the eighth-fewest yards and 11th-fewest points per game, but have made up for it on the defensive side of the ball. Carolina has the second-best defense in terms of yards allowed and fourth-best in points allowed per game.
New England’s offense isn’t anything to write home about, ranking 15th in yards gained and 10th in points scored per game while the defense is more of the same. Allowing 352.9 yards and 20.5 points per game, which ranks 13th and eighth, respectively.
Considering both teams’ strengths are their defenses, the UNDER may be one of the better plays in the game.
Patriots vs Panthers Total Odds
- OVER 41.5 -110
- UNDER 41.5 -110
This season, the UNDER is 6-2 in Panthers games while being 4-4 in New England’s games. The average total of a Patriots game is 46.3 while the average total for a Panthers game is 40.5
The game will start a 1 p.m. EST on CBS next Sunday.
