Revamped Offense
Upon acquiring Sam Darnold in the offseason, the Carolina Panthers fanbase was very skeptical of him coming in given his rocky stint with the New York Jets. However, Darnold has proven every one of his doubters wrong at this point. Darnold had thrown for 1,189 yards (sixth-most) and five touchdowns at a QBR of 62.7 (sixth-most) through four games and has used every one of his players to their fullest potential. He also leads the league in rushing touchdowns (5).
Looking at some of these players, DJ Moore has been the top receiver leading the team in targets (43), yards (398), and touchdowns (3). Christian McCaffrey, when healthy, has done his part on the offense as well, with 201 rushing yards and 163 receiving yards.
With the offense continuing to come together every week, this is certainly a hard team to get in the way of.
Defensive Anchors
Aside from the offense, the Panthers defense is on a whole new level compared to last season. This season they are third in fewest points allowed, second in passing yards allowed, tenth in rushing yards allowed and third in overall yards allowed.
They have some of the best pass rushers in the league with Brian Burns, Haason Reddick, Shaq Thompson, and Derrick Brown amongst others. In total, the Panthers have the second-most sacks in the league with 14.
In the secondary, they have just traded for former 2020 first-round pick, CJ Henderson and also have 2021 first rounder Jaycee Horn making up the cornerbacks, in addition to Donte Jackson. This secondary has five interceptions so far which is tied for the fifth most this season.
It is clear that both sides of the ball are coming together for Carolina and they will continue to be a force to be reckoned with throughout the season.
