- Cam Newton is a -400 favorite to be the New England Patriots starting quarterback Week 1 of the 2020 regular season.
- Jarrett Stidham has +275 odds to be named the Week 1 starter for the Patriots against the Miami Dolphins.
FOXBORO, Mass. – For the first time in nearly two decades, the New England Patriots will have an open quarterback competition.
This comes after the team let six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady walk in free agency as he eventually signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With training camp for the New England Patriots opening up next week all eyes will be on two former Auburn Tigers football alumni in Cam Newton and Jarrett Stidham when quarterbacks report next week.
This might be the last chance for Newton to revive his career after he only played in two games last season for the Carolina Panthers after suffering a Lisfranc injury in his foot that required surgery.
This led to the Panthers releasing the former No. 1 overall pick after failing to find a team willing to trade for him. Newton’s injury history is lengthy and that could’ve been one of the main reasons why so many NFL teams passed on him.
It won’t be easy following in the footsteps of Tom Brady, but the Patriots are still a good team and the winner of this quarterback competition will inherit a team that went 12-4 last season.
Patriots Quarterback Week 1 2020 Regular Season Betting Odds
- Cam Newton -400
- Jarrett Stidham +275
- Brian Hoyer +2800
Not long-ago sportsbooks had Jarrett Stidham as the favorite to be the starting quarterback for the Patriots Week 1 at -350 odds.
Sportsbooks now favor the newly signed Cam Newton to be the starter in New England Week 1 when they take on the Miami Dolphins at -400 odds.
Stidham remains somewhat close on the odds board at +275 but if Cam Newton comes into camp with no injury setbacks it might be best to fade Stidham on the NFL betting prop.
Stidham is still a bit of an unknown to the NFL as he was drafted in the fourth round with the 133rd pick overall in the 2019 NFL Draft.
He’s only completed two of his four career passes for 14 yards and has one interception but that shouldn’t mean Stidham should be counted out of the competition. Rolling the dice on Stidham’s +275 odds to eclipse Newton for the starting job should be avoided.
Newton will likely take over the competition and remain the starter for the season as Newton’s running ability will allow the Patriots offense added flexibility in the running game. Plus, Newton has already shown he understands the “Patriot Way” of dealing with the media.
It seems like Cam Newton and his new coach Bill Belichick might have more in common than previously thought. Either way, all signs point to Newton starting under center for New England in Week 1.
