- Jalen Hurts has entered the 2020 NFL Draft.
- The Patriots, Panthers, and Colts could be in the market to draft him.
- Hurts is coming off a career year in his last year of collegiate football.
LAS VEGAS - With the NFL Draft approaching in a couple of months, there has been questioning around former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback, Jalen Hurts and if he will be drafted in the first two rounds. Hurts could fill the quarterback role for many teams that are in need of someone new under center.
He is coming off his best year ever while playing college football. There is no question that the talent is there for the former Sooner. The real question is, will a team with already decent Super Bowl odds pick him up to sit him a couple of years? Or will a team draft him to try and change their odds now?
Odds At Making Rounds 1 & 2
There is no doubt that Jalen Hurts will be on his way to the NFL, but the question is if he’ll be selected in the first two rounds. Odds have Hurts going in the first two rounds at -110 while the odds of not making the first two are -130.
This is one of the more surprising prop bets on the NFL Draft as Hurts proved this season that he has the talent to make a difference somewhere. The NFL Draft odds indicate that he is a very underrated quarterback.
Teams That Could Take The Chance
There is no reason for Jalen Hurts to have to wait long to hear his name get called at the draft. He has shown that he has the ability to be an elite player. Now it just depends on what team is willing to take the chance and let him prove what he can do.
Indianapolis Colts
The Colts are in the market for a new quarterback as Jacoby Brissett will not be making his way back to Lucas Oil Stadium. Hurts could be a viable option for them as he would fit right in with their above-average offense.
For Hurts’ explosive offensive mindset, this would be a great fit as the Colts have a top-5 offensive line in the league led by Quenton Nelson.
Their receiving core is also on the good side as T.Y. Hilton is a proven veteran and Zach Pascal has nowhere to go but up. Their Super Bowl odds would increase with Hurts on the roster as he would fit very well.
Carolina Panthers
The Panthers could also be in the market for a quarterback if they decide to move on from Cam Newton. If Newton is indeed on his way out, the organization as a whole would need to open their eyes and realize the Kyle Allen is not the answer and that Jalen Hurts would be the ideal fit for them.
His style of play is similar to Newton’s in a way since they could both escape the pocket and avoid getting sacked. Running quarterbacks are starting to become a trend league-wide and Hurts very well fits that description.
Not that their Super Bowl odds were high to begin with, but if it were Hurts under center instead of Allen, the odds would certainly get shorter.
New England Patriots
This might come as a surprise at first but Hurts could really develop in New England. With all of the rumors surrounding Tom Brady’s free agency decision, this could leave them looking for their next franchise quarterback. Even if Brady were to stay, New England should consider drafting him being that Brady is bound to retire sooner rather than later.
If Hurts did join New England it would be beneficial to both sides. It would bring Hurts to a championship organization with the leadership of arguably the greatest coach of all-time in Bill Belichick. It would also help New England break into what is becoming a mobile quarterback league which is an area that Brady never really discovered.
Career Year
Many thought that Hurts leaving Alabama would cause damage to his career, and boy were they wrong. Hurts turned in a career year during his lone season with Oklahoma having thrown for 3,851 yards (7th in NCAA) and 32 touchdowns.
Not to mention, Hurts also had a career year running the ball as well. Hurts rushed for 1,298 yards and 20 touchdowns to make it 52 total scores on the season.
This might sound like a stretch, but with stats like this, how can one not compare him to Lamar Jackson? Hurts’ stats this season matchup well with the reigning MVP.
Before the Draft, Hurts will look to raise some eyebrows at the NFL combine.
