Is Stephon Gilmore Being Overlooked for NFL’s DPOY?

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Patriots fans are waiting to see how the new age of their team without Tom Brady will begin and sports bettors know it could possibly run through reigning Defensive Player Of the Year, Stephon Gilmore.

Gilmore may not just be the best player on the defense but the best player on the roster this year.

The Patriots’ defense will definitely be the star of the show and this may lead to Gilmore having to step up even more to have control of the games.

If he has another good season, he could find himself on top of the league defensively again by winning DPOY.

Lawrence Taylor, J.J Watts, and Aaron Donald are the only players to win the award back to back in the almost 50 years of the award being presented.

As the beginning of the season gets closer, it seems that the oddsmakers do not have much faith that the Patriot CB will join that list.

Last year, Gilmore finished the season with two defensive touchdowns, a career-high six interceptions.

His interception mark was tied for first in the league and he was first in the league in passes defended with 20 as well.

It is not very common for a cornerback to win DPOY, though. Gilmore is only the sixth cornerback to win the award and the three players with the shortest odds to win the award are all linemen.

The quarterbacks that Gilmore will be facing this year are better than last year so that could cause him to have trouble producing the same success this year.

This year the team has to face Patrick Mahomes, Russel Wilson, and Lamar Jackson in the regular season.

Gilmore was the first Patriot and first cornerback in 10 years to win DPOY.

The New England Patriots will be depending on him to have a big year and if he is successful, he could add another first to this resume, helping NFL bettors get a major return.
