- Kenny Pickett, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ rookie QB, is the favorite (+500 odds) to win the Offensive Player of the Year.
- He’s followed by RB Breece Hall and half-a-dozen talented wide receivers on the odds boards.
- Pickett is currently third on the QB depth chart for the Steelers.
PITTSBURGH – Kenny Pickett of the Pittsburgh Steelers is a mild favorite to win the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
Pickett is the only quarterback with odds under +1000 to win the 2022-23 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
2022/23 – Offensive Rookie of the Year Odds
- Kenny Pickett +500
- Breece Hall +800
- Christian Watson +800
- Drake London +800
- Treylon Burks +800
- Chris Olave +1000
- Garrett Wilson +1000
- Skyy Moore +1000
Joining Pickett in the under +1000 club is RB Breece Hall and a full six wide receivers. The 2022 quarterback draft class saw only Pickett go in the first round.
Notably, however, the OROY award does not have the same bias towards quarterbacks as the MVP does.
The reigning OROY is WR Ja’Marr Chase, and although the two previous winners were quarterbacks – Kyler Murray and Justin Herbert – the two before that were running backs Saquon Barkley and Alvin Kamara.
This means that even though many might expect the award to go to a QB, historical data suggests it genuinely is up for grabs.
Pickett, as the only first round QB, walked into a situation in Pittsburgh where he has a chance to be a starter on Day 1.
However, it is still highly unlikely that he actually does start, meaning he could be overvalued due to being a quarterback.
Pickett is currently third on the depth chart behind Mitch Trubisky as well as Mason Rudolph. It’s unlikely that a QB unable to beat those two out will manage to do much in his rookie year.
The issue is that after Pickett there is one obviously elite RB in Breece Hall, and then half-a-dozen WRs, all of whom could be the best WR in the class.
This situation leaves Pickett alone at the top of the NFL odds, whether he deserves to be or not.
