Roethlisberger surprised everyone when he addressed a virtual conference for Christian men and exposed his struggles with alcoholism and pornography.
"It's not always easy," said Roethlisberger. "People don't realize all the time that us athletes, we're human. We sin like everybody else. I am no different. We make mistakes. We get addicted to things. We sin. We're human. I think sometimes we get to put on this pedestal where we can't make mistakes. I've fallen as short as anybody. I've been addicted to alcohol. I've been addicted to pornography, which makes me then not the best husband, not the best father, not the best Christian I can be.”
Big Ben’s personal struggles continued as he suffered from a season-ending elbow injury last season. Now, he is looking ahead with optimism, believing his faith and his drive will allow him to recover quickly.
"I'm so thankful that this injury happened during my walk that I'm in now," said Roethlisberger. "I don't know that I would've been able to handle it a few years ago, five, six, seven, 10 years ago. I know that my faith wouldn't have been as strong. Now that I know what it's about, it's easy to say, 'Hey, God, this is in your hands. I'm going to go train my butt off to get back out there, and whatever you have for me, I'm ready.”
Sports bettors are seemingly confident in his play once the season resumes, with action being taken on prop bets surrounding Roethlisberger’s play.
Betting lines for Big Bens regular seasons touchdown totals and passing yards have sports bettors split, with short odds on both the over/under.
Pittsburgh Steelers - Ben Roethlisberger - 2020-2021 Regular Season Passing TDs
- Over 27.5 -110
- Under 27.5 -120
Pittsburgh Steelers - Ben Roethlisberger - 2020-2021 Regular Season Passing Yards
- Over 4000.5 EVEN
- Under 4000.5 -130
As Big Ben expressed to the public that he is recovered and working hard every day, there is no reason to assume these off-field issues will affect the Steelers' chances to make the Super Bowl.
However, those who are more cynical than the rest at least have a reason to take the under. Either way, the Steelers begin their 2020 NFL regular season being favored (-3.5) on the road against the New York Giants.
