CLEVELAND – The 2021 NFL Draft is only a couple of days away and there has been some news potentially revealing who the San Francisco 49ers may be selected with the third overall pick.
Ian Rapoport tweeted that the 49ers are choosing between Mac Jones and Trey Lance.
As the #49ers close in on their decision of which QB to take at No. 3, sources say they are down to two prospects — and the belief is those two are #Bama QB Mac Jones and #NDSU QB Trey Lance. Several sources say the focus does appear to have shifted to those two.

In wake of this news, online sportsbooks have rushed to change their odds on who the 49ers will take.
How The Odds Moved
Odds on Bovada have moved significantly since the news broke. Before the Rapoport tweet, Justin Fields was listed as the second-most likely player at +225, he now has odds of +400. Anyone interested in betting on Fields, should head over to MyBookie, where he is listed at +600.
Lance’s betting odds have shifted as well. On Bovada he has moved from +250, the third shortest odds, to +175, good for second-shortest. MyBookie has Lance at +125.
Jones has been the betting favorite to be the third pick for quite some time now, but has become a slightly bigger favorite and can be found with odds between -180 and -190.
Bovada Third Overall Pick Odds
- Mac Jones -190
- Trey Lance +175
- Justin Fields +400
MyBookie Third Overall Pick Odds
- Mac Jones -180
- Trey Lance +125
- Justin Fields +600
Explaining the Odds
Obviously, the odds show that the 49ers are being projected to take a quarterback. The reason why prospects like Kyle Pitts, Ja’Marr Chase and Penei Sewell aren’t being listed as likely possibilities is because the 49ers traded up from No. 12 and gave up an extra two firsts and a third to get the No. 3 pick.
No franchise would ever give up multiple first round picks to trade up in a draft to take any position other than quarterback. The 49ers are clearly looking at a signal-caller for the future, and seem to have found their guy, allegedly between Jones and Lance.
How to Watch
The first round of the 2021 NFL Draft will take place on Thursday, April 29 and will begin at 8 p.m. EST.
