- The San Francisco 49ers have +1400 longshot odds to win Super Bowl 56.
- The 49ers were a top 10 defense last season but starting QB Jimmy Garoppolo threw 7 TDs and 5 INTs.
SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco 49ers are a longshot team and looking at their roster, San Francisco has a lot of things working against them.
Their top 10 defense has been gutted in the offseason, Jimmy Garoppolo struggled in six games last season and is returning as the starting QB, and the rest of the NFC West has improved.
There are many reasons why those betting on Super Bowl 56 should ignore the long odds on the 49ers this season.
SUPER BOWL 56 (2022) - Odds To Win
- Kansas City Chiefs +500
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers +600
- Buffalo Bills +1100
- Green Bay Packers +1300
- Baltimore Ravens +1400
- Los Angeles Rams +1400
- San Francisco 49ers +1400
- Cleveland Browns +1600
- Seattle Seahawks +2200
Last Season Struggles
The 49ers finished at the bottom of the NFC West last season only managing a 6-10 record while going 1-7 at home.
While starting QB Jimmy Garoppolo did suffer a high ankle sprain injury in Week 2 causing him to miss most of the season, in the games he did play his performance was lacking.
Jimmy G threw for just 1,096 yards collecting 7 TDs and 5 INTs in the process during the 2020 season. Garoppolo also finished with a QBR of 61.5 and a 67.1 completion percentage.
So far in training camp Jimmy G has has struggled ahead of the season opener. While unlikely, there is a chance that rookie QB Trey Lance could earn the starting spot over Garoppolo before the season ends.
This shift in QB may end up seeing the team completely change offensively during the season which could go either way for the team.
Offseason Woes
The only thing the 49ers had going for them last season was their top 10 defense which was in large part due to the play of Richard Sherman who is no longer with the team.
In addition to losing Sherman, the 49ers lose 8.5 sacks from DE Kerry Hyder Jr and quality pieces in CB Ahkello Witherspoon, DL Solomon Thomas, and LB Joe Walker who all left during free agency.
DE Dion Jordan, DE Ziggy Ansah, C Ben Garland, and CB Jamar Taylor are all currently unsigned free agents who could potentially rejoin the roster, but as of now are not on the team.
So, with their offense struggling and their defense likely to be worse next season betting on the 49ers to win Super Bowl 56 truly looks like a longshot bet. But as they say, any given Sunday.
